Parking woes escalate in Greek capital

Unlawful parking in central Athens stays a significant drawback regardless of intensified enforcement efforts, metropolis officers say.

In simply 12 days in January, municipal police issued 5,270 tickets for unlawful parking, with over 2,100 violations involving vehicles blocking sidewalks, in response to Deputy Mayor Thomas Georgiadis. He described the scenario as “troublesome and and at a lifeless finish.”

Athens has seen a pointy rise in personal automobiles, with 100,000 extra registered between 2022 and 2023. In the meantime, authorized parking stays scarce, with simply 3,463 areas for guests and steep storage charges exceeding €12 per hour.

Regardless of penalties – together with two-month license suspensions for blocking disabled ramps – violations persist. In 2024, municipal police recorded 471,785 visitors offenses, with over 16,600 circumstances resulting in license or registration suspensions.
